Sebastian Vettel won his second Singapore Grand Prix after Lewis Hamilton retired from the race due to a gearbox issue. Hamilton led the race from pole before he was left with no drive and his car stopped on track on lap 23.
At the start of the race, Hamilton led Maldonado who in turn lost two places to Vettel and Button. Meanwhile, Alonso overtook di Resta to take 5th place. But the real action happened behind where many drivers including Rosberg and Webber were forced out of track but luckily there was no serious damage. However, Felipe Massa got a puncture and was foced to make an early pitstop.
At this stage it looked like many drivers were gonna opt for three stop strategy and Webber was the first to make his stop on lap 8. Sebastian Vettel followed him on lap 10, Alonso on lap 11, Hamilton on 12, and Button on lap 14. Vettel at that time was a little behind Hamilton and came out in traffic behind Sauber's Sergio Perez who had started on the prime tyres. But once he was able to overtake Sergio Perez and a trail of drivers ahead of him he was able to make up for the loss by setting some quick laps.
It looked like the race was in Hamilton's bag until lap 23 when his car was struck in neutral gear and he stopped on track. A dejected Hamilton walked back to the garage after having a picture perfect race till then. McLaren was already aware of the problem which was probably caused when he brushed through to the walls in qualifying yesterday.
On lap 33, Karthikeyan hit the walls on turn 18 bringing out the Safety Car. Pit lane soon got crumped as most of the field pitted for new tyres. Order at this time was Vettel, Button, Alonso, Paul di Resta and Hulkenberg. Hulkenberg had started the race on prime(soft) tyres and had only pitted once. During the safety car period, Maldondo was forced to retire as his team informed him that his car was suffering from a hydraulics issue.
Safety Car went in on lap 38 but not for long as Schumacher locked his wheels heavily and crashed into Toro Rosso of Jean Eric Vergne. Schumacher apologized to the Frenchman as the latter showed sporting spirit for the same and accepted apology.
Webber(on three stops), Hulkenberg and Perez(on two stops) pitted during this 2nd safety car period. They all lost places because the gap between drivers had decreased due to the first Safety Car.
Massa started an amazing charge on lap 43 when Safety Car returned to the pits. He overtook Senna in a crazy move where he was trying to prevent a crash and in the process came out ahead of the latter. The two Saubers, Webber and Hulkenberg were involved in two quick incidents. Webber came out ahead of all of them after overtaking Kobayashi outside the track, who in turn made contact with Hulkenberg. Kobayashi damaged his front wing while Hulkenberg punctured his tyres, both were forced to pit.
Back in front, Button and Vettel were setting some fastest laps but in the end Button's tyre started to fade and Vettel went on to win the race by a comfortable margin of 9 seconds. Paul di Resta's tyre were four laps fresher than Alonso but he failed to overtake the latter. Nevertheless, he finished in 4th place, his best ever result in Formula 1!
Nico Robserg finished in 5th place ahead of Lotus's of Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean. Lotus had a poor weekend and also used team orders as Raikkonen is still in title contention. Mark Webber couldn't overtake Daniel Ricciardo at the end and took the final championship point.
Sergio Perez could only finish 11th as his strategy failed due to wrong timing of Safety Car. Timo Glock helped Marussia overtake Caterham in constructors standings as he finished in a strong 12th place on a track where he scored his last podium in 2009(with Toyota).
The race ended two laps earlier as we crossed the 2 hour race limit because of two Safety Car periods. Also the drivers who had planned to stop thrice only twice while two stoppers suffered because of wrong timing of the same.
