Last year's Indian GP winner Sebastian Vettel topped timesheets again in FP1 with a lap time of 1m27.619. Button set his fastest lap time at the end of the session(1m27.929s), 3 tenths slower than Vettel but a tenth faster than Alonso's 1m28.044s. The three drivers finished in the same place as they finished at last years race.
There was little action in first half an hour of the session as most drivers did a single lap of the track. Sauber's Esteban Gutierrez who replaced Perez for the session was the first to set a lap timed. McLaren drivers followed as the lap times remained in 1:30s.
Lewis Hamilton who faced mechanical problems in last three races was 4th fastest after briefly leading the session. Mark Webber who played cricket with Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir earlier this week was 5th fastest ahead of Mercedes of Nico Rosberg. Michael Schumacher was 4 tenths slower than his younger teammate as he ended the session in 8th place. Felipe Massa got sandwiched between the two Mercedes drivers with a lap time of 1m28.542s.
Daniel Ricciardo impressed everyone with 9th fastest time of the session(1m29.204s) ahead of Lotus' Kimi Raikkonen. Bottas replaced Bruno Senna at Williams for this session and was 11th fastest, though his lap time of 1m29.691s as over 2 seconds slower than Vettel's.
Force India wasn't particuarly impressive at its home ground with Paul di Resta and Nico Hulkenberg setting only 12th and 14th fastest time of the session respectively. The Indian team's performance had improved significantly in the 2nd half of the season and they finished in top 10 at almost every practice session. However, we failed to see that improvement in today's session.
At the back of the grid, Narain Karthikeyan beat his teammate by 7 tenths and Marussia's Timo Glock by two tenths to finish in 22nd place to the delightment of the home crowd.
