Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton took pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix on Saturday, beating teammate Nico Rosberg by three tenths of a second in an entrhalling qualifying session in Barcelona.
Rosberg had the edge over Hamilton the entire weekend, but when it mattered the most, the Brit was able to jump ahead with a time of 1:22.000.
Red Bull emerged as Mercedes' closest challenger on a day Ferrari underperformed, with Daniel Ricciardo qualifying third ahead of Max Verstappen.
McLaren made its first Q3 appearance of the season, with Fernando Alonso 10th fastest in qualifying.
