Red Bull Racing will field Max Verstappen at next week’s Spanish Grand Prix, with Russian Daniil Kvyat demoted to the sister Toro Rosso squad.
The change in the driver line-up comes in the wake of the events of the last week’s Russian Grand Prix where Kvyat twiced rear-ended Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, wrecking both his and the German’s race.
Daniel Ricciardo was also caught in the mayhem so caused, with the result that neither Red Bull drivers finished in the points.
Following extensive internal discussions, Red Bull has decided to demote Kvyat to Toro Rosso, with Verstappen being given the opportunity to race for the senior team.
“Max has proven to be an outstanding young talent. His performance at Toro Rosso has been impressive so far and we are pleased to give him the opportunity to drive for Red Bull Racing,’’ Red Bull boss Christian Horner said.
"We are in the unique position to have all four drivers across Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso under long term contracts with Red Bull, so we have the flexibility to move them between the two teams.
"Dany will be able to continue his development at Toro Rosso, in a team that he is familiar with, giving him the chance to regain his form and show his potential."
