Sergio Perez who finished second in the Malaysian Grand Prix believes that victory was withing his reach at Sepang. Despite that he was satisfied with his best ever result in Formula One.
“It is a great day for me. The team did a very good job and I feel very happy for them. It is a really nice feeling to have been on the podium here, but I think victory was also within reach. Said 'Checo'.
''I ran wide in the quick corner, I touched a kerb and I went to the dirty side. It was completely wet and that was the end of the win, probably.''
The Mexican who started the race from 10th place was running in third place at the time of red flag benefiting from an early pit stop to wet tyres. With this second place finish, Perez becomes the first Mexican driver since Pedro Rodriguez in 1971 to finish on podium.
Checo was within a second of Fernando Alonso and was set to overtake the Spaniard in the latter part of the race before sliding wide on lap 50 losing 5 valuable seconds. He finished the race two seconds behind Alonso.
''Twice in the race I was catching Fernando. On the final stint, when I was on the hard tyre compound, my tyres had degraded quite a lot. It wasn’t easy and I went wide and touched a curb. I actually was lucky not to go off. Before that Fernando had just pitted on the perfect lap for dry tyres, just one lap before me, and I lost a bit of ground to him.
Perez also thanked his team for helping him achieve his first podium finish of his F1 career.
''It was very difficult to make the right calls today and I want to thank my team. They always called me in at the right time, the first stop after lap one was especially important and it was also good to take the hard compound in the end, as the medium compound was not working too well for us. It is only our second race in 2012 and I think we have a great season ahead of us.''
