McLaren looked very strong at the start of the season with Jenson Button winning the first race of the season and Lewis Hamilton aksi finishing on the podium. The race was followed by a long run of slow pit stops that saw their drivers losing multiple places. After 8 races, McLaren are 2nd in the constructors championship, 39 points adrift of Red Bull; in the drivers standings, Hamilton is in 3rd place, 23 points behind leader Fernando Alonso, while Button is down in 8th place with 49 points.
Malaysian Grand Prix
McLaren's Lewis Hamilton led teammate Jenson Button at the start of a wet Malaysian Grand Prix ahead of Sauber's Sergio Perez and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso. Heavy rain brought out the red flags and race later resumed behind the Safety Car. Safety Car entered the pits on lap 13 and Hamilton stopped for intermediate tyres on the following lap. He lost five seconds in his pit stop because he had to wait for incoming Massa to enter his pit box(right next to Hamilton's) before he could exit his pit box. He came out behind Alonso who went on the win the race. Sergio Perez who pitted one lap later, also came ahead of Hamilton leaving the latter in 3rd place.
Chinese Grand Prix
At the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, Button was in pursuit of Nico Rosberg, hoping to beat the German with a three stop strategy. But he had a very slow stop(pit stop time - 9 seconds) on lap 39 and he came behind a long trail of cars. Had he had a normal stop, he would have come ahead of this trail in 2nd place and would have challenged the Mercedes driver for race win.
Bahrain Grand Prix
Bahrain Grand Prix was the worst race of the season for McLaren with two painfully slow stops for Lewis Hamilton. His pit crew had problems in fitting the left rear tyre and lost around 12 seconds in those two slow pit stops. He came out in 11th place and then put on a brilliant drive to finish the race in 8th place. His teammate Jenson Button retired from 7th place after an exhaust issue.
Monaco Grand Prix
Hamilton's stop weren't too bad at Monaco however he still lost two places in the pits as the field was too close. First it was Alonso who overtook the Brit, former's pit lane time was 5th tenths less and that was enough to overtake the latter. Sebastian Vettel who started the race on prime tyres came ahead of Hamilton after his sole stop. Jenson Button's stop wasn't timed rightly and he came right behind the Caterham of Heikki Kovalainen. He found it hard to overtake the Finn on twisty streets of Monaco and later retired after sustaining damage while spinning at the Swimming Pool Chicane. McLaren also lacked general race pace in Monaco.
Canadian Grand Prix
McLaren's slow pit stops run didn't stop there and Hamilton had another slow stop(pit stop time - 5 seconds) at the Canadian Grand Prix. However, this time his rivals Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel were on a single stop strategy and they failed to take enough care of their tyres and Hamilton was lucky to overtake them in last 10 laps to win his first race of the season. Earlier in the race, Hamilton overtook race leader Sebastian Vettel by undercutting the latter. Fernando Alonso undertook both the drivers but lost that place soon to Hamilton following a DRS pass at the back straight.
European Grand Prix
Another race, another mistake in the pits but this time with the front right tyre. Having started the race from 2nd place, Hamilton lost one place to Romain Grosjean on lap 10. A few laps later he made his first stop in mere 2.9 seconds, the fastest pitstop of the season. But when Hamilton and McLaren tried to make the most of the safety car which came out on lap 29, they blew it with a 14 second pit stop. That dropped Hamilton in 5th place. Had he had a normal stop, he would have come out of the pit lane in 3rd place and would have won the race since Vettel and Grosjean who were ahead of him retired later in the race due to a mechanical failures. Instead, he struggled to Raikkonen and Maldonado behind in the final laps due to severe tyre wear. On the second last lap, Hamilton collided with Maldonado, while Hamilton retired from the race, Maldonado finished in 12th place after a 20 second post race penalty.
We hope that McLaren soon find a solution to their pit stop errors and don't incur any pit stop fumble, but in case they do, we'll update this article with the same.
