Lewis Hamilton put on a fantastic drive to win the Canadian Grand Prix and become the 7th winner from 7 races this season.
This was Hamilton's third Canadian GP win having won the race previously in 2007 and 2010.
“I want to dedicate this one to all the fans who send messages and are constantly sending messages and being supportive,” said Hamilton. “I loved every single minute of it. I never had a doubt that there wasn’t a possibility (of winning). I assumed the guys (Alonso and Vettel) were one stopping as they were falling behind." “It’s been five years since I won for the first time here. But it feels just as good. This feels like one of the best races I’ve had for a long time.”
Surprisingly, everyone got a clear start with Vettel leading Hamilton, Alonso and rest of the field. Massa put on a charge and ovetook Rosberg to take 5th place only to spin on turn 2 a few laps later and move out of top 10. Di Resta who got a great start and ran as high as 5th, was forced to make an early stop on lap 13 due to heavy tyre degradation.
Race leader Sebastian Vettel made his first stop on lap 16 and found himself behind Hamilton and Alonso after they made their pit stops one and three laps later respectively. Alonso came out ahead of both the drivers after his pitstop but Hamilton overtook him with DRS on former's outlap.
The rest of the field who opted for a two stop strategy pitted during the same period. Button who started the race on hard tyres and would have probably hoped to complete the race on single stop was forced to stop for a new set of option tyres earlier than expected, lap 15.
Raikkonen and Perez made their single stops on lap 40 and 41 respectively and switched to Pirelli option tyres having started the race on prime tyres.
Back at the front, Hamilton who had a 3 second gap to Alonso made his second stop on lap 50. He soon found that both Alonso and Vettel were going for a single stop strategy and he has to overcome a 16 second gap. His freshers tyres were much faster than both of them as he set a series of fastest laps and was at the back of Vettel by lap 60. He overtook the German on lap 62 and Alonso two laps later.
Vettel finally made his second stop on lap 63 while Alonso decided not to pit. Then came one stoppers Romain Grosjean and Sergio Perez who had decided that strategy before the race and had thus taken care of their tyres. They both overtook Alonso on last few laps and finished in 2nd and 3rd place and went on to score their second podium of their career. Vettel also overtook Alonso by the end of the race to finish 4th and set the fastest lap of the race on the final lap.
Rosberg had a busy afternoon and went on to finish the race in 6th place ahead of Red Bull's Mark Webber and one stopper Kimi Raikkonen. Felipe Massa having lost ground after and early spin finished in 10th place to take the final championship point.
Paul di Resta lost ground after a great start due to an early stop finished in 11th place ahead of his teammate Nico Hulkenberg.
It was another poor day for Jenson Button who was forced to make three stops, the Briton was unhappy with lap of grip and severe tyre degradation on his McLaren . Michael Schumacher had a equally poor and frustrating day after he was forced to retire when his DRS got struck in open position.
The result make Lewis Hamilton the championship leader with 88 points, two points ahead of Fernando Alonso and three points ahead of Sebastian Vettel, who in turn is 6 points ahead of his teammate Mark Webber.
In the constructors standings, Red Bull remain on with 164 points, followed by McLaren with 133 points and Lotus with 133 points; Ferrari slipped to 4th place.
