Today marks the first day of testing in the all new 2012 season, The hype has been there for a while now and thanks to late surge in the off season news and rumors, the buzz was on through out the winter break. Caterham was the first to take it to the track and ironically they were the last team to set the time during the course of the day.
Kimi Raikkonen couldn't have asked for a better start to his campaign as he the fastest time of the day breaking into the 1.19's mark. The Lotus Team like most of its rivals went all out to gather more mileage under its belt, With the Iceman posting a laptime of 1.19.638's during his 76 laps.Paul di Resta came a close second with Nico Rosberg driving last year Mercedes car took the third position in what seemed to be a good day of testing for majority of Teams.
Mark Webber came fourth after the Team faced a problem in getting the rear components of the car from the factory. This limited the Australian's running. Daniel Ricciardo came fifth even after losing time due to drop in oil pressure in his Toro Rosso.
Micheal Schumacher took the wheels of Mercedes in the afternoon and finished in sixth ahead of Kamui Kobayashi who along with Paul di Resta completed over 100 laps. While Mclaren and Ferrari seemed to be doing their own program as Jenson Button and Felipe Massa posted 7th and 8th fastest lap times respectively. Heikki Kovalainen _running at the Caterham was hampered with the issues related to started motor and the Team had a hard time in getting the car back onto the track
Pastor Maldonado took to the wheels of Williams FW34 after the launch earlier in the day. The Team seems to have satisfied its initial shakedown and Pedro de la Rosa completed yet a handful of laps in the 2011 HRT
Overall, things are looking bright after the first day test with lots of Teams showing good reliability and some of the Teams running their own program. It would be interesting to see how the Top Teams approach the second day of testing
