McLaren's Jenson Button started the 2012 F1 season by storm by winning the Australian Grand Prix. The British driver overtook pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton by turn one and from that point it never looked like he would ever give up his lead.

Defending double world champion Sebastian Vettel used the Safety Car and overtook Hamilton to finish in second place, while his team-mate and home hero Mark Webber finished in fourth place. Another double world champion Fernando Alonso finished in an impressive fifth place after starting from 12th. Both Saubers impressed with their pace and finished the race in sixth and eight place. Saubers are now third in the championship behind McLaren and Red Bull. Kimi Raikkonen was sandwiched between the two Sauber drivers, he managed to score six points by finishing seventh. Ricciardo and di Resta finished in 9th and 10th place to grab two and one point respectively.
It was a tough day for Mercedes, Schumacher retired due to a gearbox issue while running in third place while his team-mate Nico Rosberg was involved in a collision with Maldonado. He didn't have the pace to recover and eventually finished in a disappointing 12th place. Both the Williams driver were involved in collisions. Maldonado crashed heavily on last lap and the subsequent events made it one of the best final lap in recent times. Both Caterhams failed to finish Petrov's CT01 brought out the safety car. Nico Hulkenberg, Felipe Massa and Romain Grosjean also failed to finish,
