Fernando Alonso became the first driver to win two races this season with an emphatic victory in front of his home crowd. The drivers who started from top three places retired and were replaced by Alonso, Raikkonen and Schumacher.
At the start of the race, Vettel got a clear start(as usual) ahead of Hamilton; Grosjean was slow off the line but put some great overtaking moves to move into 3rd place, overtaking Raikkonen and Maldonado in the process.
Alonso, who started the race from 5th place got a great start overtaking a number of drivers in his first stint. Back at the front, Grosjean overtook Hamilton on lap 10. But both of them could only see Sebastian Vettel blistering away as the latter made a massive 10 second lead over the rest of the field.
Lewis Hamilton was first of the front runner to pit on lap 13; Vettel and Grosjean pitted together three laps later. The top order remained the same with Vettel leading Grosjean and Hamilton by 20 seconds.
Heikki Kovalainen and Jean Eric Vergne were involved in an incident at the back straight which left a lot of debris on track and brought out the safety car. Kovalainen continued after making a pit stop while Vergne was forced to retire. Most drivers made their second and final pitstop under the safety car with McLaren getting Hamilton's stop wrong again. A extremely slow 14 second pit stop placed him down in 5th place.
The action resumed when safety car entered the pits and it was Alonso who charged up to 2nd place by overtaking Grosjean. Soon, Vettel stopped on the track moving Alonso to race lead. Grosjean who was chasing Alonso for the lead also stopped due to a mechanical issue a few laps later.
Raikkonen overtook Hamilton in the final stages, with the latter suffering from severe tyre degradation. On the second last lap, Maldonado tried an unsuccessful move over Hamilton, forcing the latter to retire. He was on the back of Hamilton on the back straight and into the final corner with Hamilton not ready to give up his position. Maldonado was off the track in the corner and pushed Hamilton into the barriers.
Alonso, thus went on to win the race ahead of Kimi Raikkonen. Michael Schumacher pitted later on lap 41 for his second stop gained a number of places as other drivers were dying for grip having stopped under the safety cat earlier in the race. Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg with similar strategies finished in 4th and 6th place. The Force Indias had their best race of the season, Hulkenberg finished in 5th place while di Resta on a single stop strategy finished in 7th place. Jenson Button had another disappointing afternoon finishing in 8th place ahead of Sauber's Sergio Perez and William's Pastor Maldonado.
Fernando Alonso regained the championship lead as main rivals retired in the race; he's now 20 points ahead of Mark Webber, and a further 3 points clear of Lewis Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel slips down into 4th place after his retirement.
In the constructors standings, Red Bull strengthen their lead with Webber's fourth place finish ahead of McLaren, Lotus and Ferrari.
