Ferrari's Fernando Alonso clocked a lap time of 1m16.265s to top the first practice session of the 2012 Monaco Grand Prix. The session was stopped when Heikki Kovalainen's Renault engine blew in last 10 mins of the session.
The Toro Rosso's of Jean Eric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo were the first to set timed laps on the 'green track'. Vergne edged out his team-mate by just tenth of the second. Romain Grosjean and Michael Schumacher were the next two drivers to set timed laps.
At the end, Grosjean finished the session in 2nd place, just 3 tenths behind Fernando Alonso. Perez set a quick flying laps just before the Red Flag to edge out McLaren's Lewis Hamilton by just two hundredths of a second. Spain winner, Pastor Maldonado was 5th for Williams followed by Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari and Kamui Kobayashi in the second Sauber.
The two most recent world champions Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel were separated by just three hundredths of a second as they clocked 8th and 9th fastest time of the day. Then came the two Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher. The latter damaged his front wing with the kerbs at the Swimming Pool, ending his session earlier then he would have expected.The two Force Indias of Nico Hulkenberg and Paul di Resta were 12th and 16th fastest respectively.
Mark Webber ended down in 13th place with a laptime of 1m18.106s. Raikkonen completed a single installation lap as he was unhappy with the front wing and decided to change it.
