Mark Webber overtook Alonso in the closing stages of the race to win the 2012 British Grand Prix. Webber thus becomes the second driver to win two races this season after Alonso.

Alonso got a clear start on lap 1 ahead of Mark Webber and Michael Schumacher as Massa overtook Vettel to take 4th place. Both Force Indias had a poor start with di Resta suffering from a puncture(due to which he later retired) and Hulkenberg losing out one place to Perez in the final sector.

As the race progressed, Alonso stretched his lead over two seconds to Webber; behind these two, Massa finally overtook Schumacher after several unsuccessful moves. Vettel was the first of thefront runners to pit on lap 11 for hard tyres having started the race on option tyres. By pitting earlier he came out in 3rd place ahead of Schumacher and Massa.

Perez made an unsuccessful move at the Brooklands over Maldonado and was forced to retire from the race. Maldonado sustained a puncture but was able to continue after making a pit stop. The accident is under investigation by the Stewards.

Hamilton who started the race on hard tyres pitted on lap 22 for a new set of option tyres. A ultra quick 2.8 second pit stop brought him out in 7th place behind Schumacher and Raikkonen. Raikkonen and Hamilton both overtook Schumacher to take 5th and 6th place.

Hamilton was forced to make another stop on lap 28 for hard tyres. His team told him over the radio that he had to run the rest of the race on the same set of tyres. The British driver then overtook Rosberg and Button before being overtaken by Grosjean on lap 35.

Back at the front, Webber and Alonso made their second and final pitstops on lap 33 and 37 respectively. Alonso having started the race on hard tyres and opted for the same type of tyres on his first pitstop had to switch to option tyres for his final stint.

As Alonso struggled with option tyres, Webber continued to decrease the gap over the Spaniard and finally overtook him at Luffield on lap 48 to win the race.

Sebastian Vettel came home in third place after retiring from a mechanical failure in Valencia a fortnight ago. Felipe Massa put on a brilliant drive to finish in 4th place. Kimi Raikkonen finished in 5th place ahead of his teammate Romain Grosjean, who lost time after an early pit stop on lap 2. Michael Schumacher regained 7th place from Hamilton who struggled with his tyres in the latter part of the race.

Bruno Senna and Nico Hulkenberg were involved in a long battle in which the Brazilian won through a DRS pass on the second last lap. While the German lost momentum and lost two more places to Button and Kobayashi to finish in 12th place. Toro Rossos of Daniel Ricciardo and Jean Eric Vergne finished in 13th and 14th place respectively ahead of Mercedes of Nico Rosberg.

Red Bull Racing has confirmed that Sebastian Buemi would be their test and reserve driver for 2011. The Swiss driver raced for Red Bull's junior team Toro Rosso for three years but was dropped from their 2012 line-up. “It’s good to remain with Red Bull for another year and have this opportunity with the world championship-winning team,” said Buemi.“I would prefer to be driving at the races of course, but working with Red Bull Racing on the development of their car and providing them with feedback throughout the season is the next best thing.”
